The November rating list shows the 2012 London Classic competitors in the following world ranking order: 1 Carlsen 2848, 2 Aronian 2815, 3 Kramnik 2795, 6 Anand 2775, 13 Nakamura 2755, 29 McShane 2713, 32 Adams 2710, 43 Polgar 2705, 112 Jones 2644.We’re now just 30 days away from the first round on 1 December and most of the competitors will be concentrating on their preparation in advance of one of the most important events of the year. All except Luke McShane, of course, who must concentrate on his day job!Magnus Carlsen has a substantial rating advantage over the field but, as Boris Gelfand demonstrated with his near miss in the world championship, ratings don’t tell the full story. Every year there have been surprises at the Classic, with its 3-1-0 points system. As always we should expect the unexpected.
